Governor vetoes improved registration provision
Friday, 22 May 2009
Governor Pawlenty has vetoed another election reform bill, the 'motor voter' automatic registration.  Current motor voter registration enables people to check a box on a drivers license application to register to vote; this bill would automatically register them unless they opt-out on the application.  Names would then have been checked against a database for eligibility.

Secretary of State Mark Ritchie supports the improvement, which would save time for voters and money for the state.  According to a Star Tribune article

"Ritchie and other Motor Voter supporters said the streamlined procedure would have been convenient for voters, reduced long lines at polling places, reduced the number of voters registering on Election Day by more than 70 percent and saved money for local governments.

The Governor cited lack of bipartisan support in his veto message
